Social Innovation Solutions Jam: How to Rapidly Prototype Solutions to Community Problems
Fed up with just talking about solutions, but never taking action? This workshop will show you how how to use rapid prototyping techniques to create innovative teams anywhere that can solve any problem, dramatically mitigate risk, and rapidly prototype dozens of new ideas with very little time and budget.

Community Resilience – The principles and processes of fostering resilient communities.
The workshop is an interactive deliberation of the principles and practical issues involved in the development of community resilience. It will cover ways in which community members can foster resilience in communities and the factors that support and limit the development of resilience.

Creating a Collective Image for Community and Meaning Using the Visual Arts
Engage in hands-on creation of a collage of community development to be pieced together with those from 2015 for a 50th CDS Anniversary quilt. Explore how the process can be used with communities to foster cohesion and identity and to create “data” about the community. No artistic talent needed.

On the Future of Community Development Education: An International Education Project
Community development educators will share their dreams and plan a common future to strengthen international collaboration about pedagogy, learning tools and how to exchange ideas, intellectual products, students and educators. The workshop is building on the development of the Global Community Development Exchange (GCDEX), the beta version of which was launched when at the 2016 CDS conference in Minneapolis St Paul. This workshop also builds on a 2017 community development summit in New Zealand. Participants will learn about the latest iteration of Indigenous Approaches and other resources to the GDEX and will be engaged in a structured discussion about global collaboration among colleges and universities. The workshop is also structured to produce a work plan for global collaboration.

This interactive session, facilitated by the leaders of a new national initiative begun in the coalfields of east Kentucky, will explore how community leaders, scholars, and development professionals can collaborate through storytelling and organizing to turn those assets into new community wealth.

Music and Manufacturing
Detroit has long been the soul of music for decades. This workshop will be journey through the musical history of Detroit, including the Motown Museum and to the headquarters of the organizers of the annual Electronic Music Festival. See how music has been a key ingredient to fortifying the sense of community in Detroit. Take a look at how Detroit is leading the way in American manufacturing again through cottage and specialty manufacturing, leveraging the existing physical and human assets to forge a path into the 21st century. This workshop will feature tours and discussions with the pioneers of Detroit’s new manufacturing Third Man Pressing (record manufacturing) and more to see how Detroit is taking steps into the future, building off the base they have.

Community in Boxing Tour
Please note - we will meet in the Motor Lobby at 11:30, so there is time to change to workout clothes or grab them.

Strap on your boxing gloves and come for a workout and a lesson in the power of comradery and spirit that the boxing gym offers. This tour includes a visit to the Downtown Boxing Gym and their Youth Program that has engaged young people, setting them on a path of educational and career success. Participants will hear about the beginning of the program from Founder and CEO Khali Sweeney and get an opportunity to workout and experience gym life first hand. Cost: $25, includes donation to gym

This tour showcases Detroit’s most unique attractions, including the Dequindre Cut and the Detroit RiverWalk. Participants will tour the city to see attractions, neighborhoods, murals, and new developments by bike, enabling them to really take it all in.
