Fed up with just talking about solutions, but never taking action? This workshop will show you how how to use rapid prototyping techniques to create innovative teams anywhere that can solve any problem, dramatically mitigate risk, and rapidly prototype dozens of new ideas with very little time and budget.
The workshop is an interactive deliberation of the principles and practical issues involved in the development of community resilience. It will cover ways in which community members can foster resilience in communities and the factors that support and limit the development of resilience.
Engage in hands-on creation of a collage of community development to be pieced together with those from 2015 for a 50th CDS Anniversary quilt. Explore how the process can be used with communities to foster cohesion and identity and to create “data” about the community. No artistic talent needed.
Community development educators will share their dreams and plan a common future to strengthen international collaboration about pedagogy, learning tools and how to exchange ideas, intellectual products, students and educators. The workshop is building on the development of the Global Community Development Exchange (GCDEX), the beta version of which was launched when at the 2016 CDS conference in Minneapolis St Paul. This workshop also builds on a 2017 community development summit in New Zealand. Participants will learn about the latest iteration of Indigenous Approaches and other resources to the GDEX and will be engaged in a structured discussion about global collaboration among colleges and universities. The workshop is also structured to produce a work plan for global collaboration.
Every community has latent cultural assets. This interactive session, facilitated by the leaders of a new national initiative begun in the coalfields of east Kentucky, will explore how community leaders, scholars, and development professionals can collaborate through storytelling and organizing to turn those assets into new community wealth.
During Beer, Bonding, and Building Community, participants will build community among CDS members over a couple of pints at three local Detroit breweries. Participants will hear first-hand from local brewers about the start of their brewery and their impact on their local neighborhood.
This gathering will give faculty who use service learning assignments and activities to meet core curricular requirements an opportunity to meet up. Participants should be ready to share examples of assignments and explanations of how they apply theory to practice. Let's co-create a peer-to-peer network for ongoing curricular design!
